很多人对对这个片子的最深印象是Dufresne那无比的毅力和信念，但，给我印象最深的却是Red在获释前跟典狱长说的一段话。

他也是没有一天不为幼时所犯下的错而感到后悔，想告诉那个孩子该做什么，不该做什么。但是，那个孩子已经不在了，剩下的唯有他这个old man。

如果说思想上、行为上有什么改过自新的话，时间上是不存在这个概念的。你做错了的是，它就永远是错误的，人类没有手段可以让时间倒流，让你去按正确的方法做重一次。正是因为这样，有时候善良的人可能会为此而背上沉重的道德包袱。

常常有时候是因为一念之差而让人犯错，如果我们有机会去监狱里问问那些犯人，估计99％的人会当时的所作所为而后悔。这又有什么用呢？当他们重新来面对这个世界的时候，发现自己已经被时代抛弃了。就像本片中的那个老图书管理员，属于他的还是监狱里的那种生活，无奈之下选择了自杀。

或许古人在个人修养上做得比现代人要好，把时间都花在修身养性上了。但更多的世故圆滑。
