Recently, some scholars show their deep concern that the world is becoming more and more vulgar. Is that true, I wonder?
Nowadays, wandering in the streets, you can see thousands of people rushing hither and thither in search of more money and material comfort. Few people now values elegance in life. Turning on the TV, you will soon find yourself surrounded by clamorous entertainment shows and ads. Few medias have their own taste now. The trend of worldwide decline of elegance and creation has penetrated into academic fields: how many writers can uphold their ideals rather than cater the popular tastes? How many scholars can endure arduous researches and thinking tasks rather than repeating those clichés? How many students can express their own emotions using original words rather than resend ready made short messages?
Seeing these entire phenomenons, painfully but inevitably we come to the conclusion that the world is in danger of vulgarization.
So what is the solution to prevent this trend? My answer is advanced education. PKU should be pioneer in this historical task. PKU should set an example by preserving the rarified atmosphere of academic. Let us work together, keep away the hustle and bustle, get rid of excessive commercial motivations and keep the serenity of campus and our soul. Let’s work together, appreciate the beauty of literature and music, enjoy the process of reflection and meditations. Only in this way, can we cultivate a society of elegant, illuminated citizens. Only in this way, can we wash off the climate of vulgarity and create a better world.
As a member of PKU and a participant of this historical changeover, I won’t shrink from my responsibility. What about you?
