昨天看那个IBM的研究院的Ponder This网页的时候， 知道IBM在全世界一共有八个研究所， 得过五次诺贝尔奖， 还有图灵奖。 有七个研究院的名字都是地名， 如奥斯丁， 北京， 东京， 海尔法。。。 只有一个像是人的名字， 那就是那个出题的数学家所在的Watson研究院。 查了一下， 才知道Watson原来是IBM的创始人， 在1956年就不在这个世界了。 这个Waston研究院是早在三十年代设立的。
看Wiki上Waston的
介绍的时候， 发现关于误传的有趣的例子。 有这样一句话："全世界只需要五台电脑就足够了。" 传说是IBM的总裁在电脑刚出现不久说的， 当然说的时候总是和那句"我们为什么要汽车， 我们已经有马勒" 这类话排列在一起。 回忆一下， 我以前确实也是听过这样的说法。
但是查找Waston的各种记录， 是发现不了他曾经说过这句话的证据的。 最早出现是在usenet上一个人的签名档里面看到的, 时间是1986。

后来有心人 查找这个话的源头的时候发现， 在1985年在usenet上曾经有这样的一个
故事， 其中根本没有Waston的名字。 这个故事的主人公是英国剑桥大学的数学教授 Douglas Hartree， 他说过一段这样意思的话， 在1951年左右。
I went to see Professor Douglas Hartree, who had built the first differential analyzers in England and had more experience in using these very specialized computers than anyone else. He told me that, in his opinion, all the calculations that would ever be needed in this country could be done on the three digital computers which were then being built — one in Cambridge, one in Teddington, and one in Manchester. No one else, he said, would ever need machines of their own, or would be able to afford to buy them.
但是IBM老大说这样的话， 远比一个数学教授说这样的话来得要好玩。 而且很重要的一个事实是， 那个时候Watson已经去世多年， 没有力气再站起来澄清这个误传了。 由一个签名档传到了今天， 不说是世人皆知， 但是认为是W氏讲这句话的人肯定比知道是数学教授讲这句话的人要多。
这个故事， 造谣一定要造死人的谣， 这样的成功机率比较大。
