究竟是什么让冒险游戏陷入卑微的境地？是什么让媒体和全世界都忽略了它的存在？也许其他类型的游戏能给我们一点线索。
第一节

一个女人因为自己特别会做肉饼而在邻里间小有名气。由于多年的做肉饼经验，从后院烧烤到圣诞派对的每次活动都会有人邀请她去。可是，她也就这点能耐了。她从未研究过任何菜谱，更别说什么蛋奶酥或烤鸡了。她给她的家人每周至少做一次肉饼，而全家早开始恶心肉饼了却都不忍心告诉她，只好闷头忍受。
面对现实吧，冒险游戏就是游戏世界里的肉饼。说得好听点，他们是对传统和现状的坚守。说难听点，概念上它们是无聊的老生常谈、对设计和技术的约束。这个类型的最大价值在于它在叙事和脑力考验上的深度和丰富，而且做得确实很棒。可是阻碍这个类型向新领域继续发展的最大难题恰恰是对这两个优点缠着不放，而且老这么一遍又一遍地重复。
在冒险游戏圈里有一种说法：“要是它没坏，就别修它。”可是我们都企盼着能有超凡脱俗的新东西出现。我们想要的到底是什么呢？我们能不去“修”就得到新东西吗？这种情绪总结成一句话就是：“过时和无聊”要比“坏掉”糟得多。不管那肉饼有多美味，我们都觉得恶心。
我认识的一个固执的玩家说过：“我认为这个游戏类型的问题在于它毁掉了创造力，而不是不思进取。我是说，要是冒险游戏能和10年甚至5年之前的一个水平，那我会玩得更多。”
另一个玩家是这么说的：“让我头疼的是，冒险游戏的图形技术是大有长进，可除此之外的其他方面全都止步不前甚至倒退了。曾几何时，好多冒险游戏的故事是那么吸引人，可现在我发现，要找到一个好点的角色、有趣些的主题、结构好的故事、精良的美工，乃至创新的谜题都实在太困难。我觉得这十分荒唐。”
还有个已经绝望透顶的玩家说：“经典的冒险游戏已经死了，一去不复返。这是有原因的。经典冒险游戏与运行它们的硬件的限制密不可分。它们已经是过去的历史了。所以说要是它们还有任何价值的话，那就是药有人能重新构思并定义它们，将它们与新一代的游戏融合在一起。除此之外其他办法都是相当愚蠢的。”
