Fast Track Race in a Case

2010-09-30

Love living life in the fast lane? Then you will most probably find the Fast Track Race in a Case one handy piece of work. This £19.99 purchase literally allows you to set up a race within seconds, but of course you will need an adequate amount of batteries to get it going. With this, you can tear up the tarmac (well, plastic would be a much more appropriate and accurate description) to just about anywhere you like within seconds. To get it up and running, just flip open the portable case, slot together the compact figure-of-eight circuit, line up the sub-Eccleston-sized cars, grab your hand-throttle and you’re good to go. The remote itself is a no-brainer to use, all you need to do is give it a squeeze and your racer will pick up additional speed.

Apple TV starting to ship

2010-09-27

The new, 2010 Apple TV is starting to ship. TiPb readers, along with readers of other sites are all getting their notification emails from Apple. We’ve only seen “prepared to ship” notices, but *MacRumors” is starting to see actual shipment notifications as well.

That might be US-only for now, however, as mine and a few others internationally are still seeing “ships in September” on our orders with nary an email in site. Here’s hoping Apple’s production machine is in full swing and Apple TV makes its global debut this week.

If you’ve waiting on a new, AirPlay and Netflix-equipped Apple TV, let us know when you ordered, where you are located, and what your order status is.

[MacRumors, thanks to Marc and everyone who sent this in!

Things to Consider Before Purchasing an iPhone

2010-09-25

If you’re subscribed to Cingular (now AT&T) and in the market for a new phone, or just simply want to buy the iPhone because it’s the latest new gadget to hit the streets – you may want to think twice before making that decision. I’ll say right away that I, myself, do not own an iPhone. However, this article is aimed at those are struck between whether or not to purchase one in the near future. This article is for you because I am in the same boat.

There are a few things you should consider before you decide to purchase the iPhone at this point in time. I have been in the market for technology related products for quite some time and I would like to give those who are not exactly well-versed in today’s technology some advice on your decision. There are a few things you should consider before purchasing the iPhone, as it may not be the best purchase to make at this point in time.

One of the biggest issues is cost. If budget is of no concern to you, then you can skip this paragraph. If price is one of the biggest concerns in your decision-making, however, just keep in mind that the iPhone is currently $499 for a 4GB model and $599 for an 8GB model. There is an extremely good chance that this high price for a cell phone will drop in a few months or more. As with most every other product in the tech market, the iPhone will probably decrease in price if you wait a few months or even a year before your purchase. If anything, Apple may release a much better, upgraded version with more memory for the same price. This is the usual trend with most Apple products, so if you have the patience and have no immediate need for the iPhone at this point in time, wait it out.

Another thing to consider is the battery. If you purchased a product from Apple before, whether it be an iPod, a MacBook, or some other mobile device with a battery, you may have issues with it dying after a year or so. This is nothing new for Apple products. They’ve had this problem in the past, and they are having it now with the iPhone. This article from news.com details the battery exchange program which is similar to the iPod. The only reason I bring this up is that if you are considering the purchase of an iPhone, you should probably wait a while until they fix any huge battery related problems, or upgrade the iPhone in a way that extends the battery life. It may or may not happen, but this is just one thing to add to your list of considerations. It’s no fun having a cool gadget to play with if you can’t even use it because its power source is not working!

Also, when you purchase an iPhone, you have to sign a new 2-year contract as well as a special iPhone Data Plan. The iPhone is also exclusive to Cingular/AT&T, so if you don’t have them as your provider and you want the iPhone, you will have to switch carriers and most likely pay an early termination fee (~$175). There are various other fees involved including taxes, activation fees, and so on. It’s the usual situation with most new cell phone and contract plans, but it can be a large turn off for some people.

Last, but not least, it’s always good to wait a few months before buying the latest and greatest gadget. Already there have been reports of issues dealing with the iPhone ranging from hacking, interference issues (this one was fixed), and various other bugs. This is normal and expected for a complex gadget like the iPhone with so much technology built into it. For you, the buyer, though, it may mean waiting a while until they have all the kinks worked out. You’ll spend much less time trying to fix it if you let the guys at Apple do it for you.

So, that’s just a few points I wanted to make about purchasing the iPhone. It’s completely up to you whether or not you want to go ahead and make the purchase now or later. Just keep in mind these particular flaws, as there are others I didn’t point out that can be found all over the web. Do your research first and then decide. It may seem like I’m bashing the iPhone for all its flaws, but really what I’m doing is making sure those who decide to get the iPhone make an educated purchase. You’ll be happy you did, and I’ll am happy that you read this, because you are now more informed.

How to Test your Memory with Memtest86+

2010-09-22

Although the computer looks like a single entity, it is in fact a mixture of components. Some components are concerned with the processing of information. Some components are concerned with on-screen display. Other components are concerned with your PC’s ability to communicate with other machines.
One of the most important components within a computer is its RAM (random access memory). What exactly is random access memory, or RAM? It is basically a little electronic chip whose goal is to provide short-term, high-speed access to data. Without it, your machine would grind to a halt as it tried to continually access data from its slower cousin, the hard drive.

Unfortunately, RAM, like any computer component is prone to failure (although the ability for RAM to live a long, stable life has been improving throughout the years). And when a stick of your RAM dies all sorts of oddities can arise. Your computer may suddenly begin freezing, blue-screening, or even restarting.

So when you do begin noticing that your PC has become “flaky”, how can you test your RAM and make sure that it, rather than some other internal component, is the culprit? The answer is: Memtest86+. Memtest86+, based upon Memtest86, is a well known free application designed to test the memory within your system. Basically what it does is write a bunch of seemingly random information to different parts of your RAM. It then proceeds to read these values back. If the written and read values are the same then everything is good to go. If, however, the written and read values differ then a defect has been detected.

Memtest86+ Screen

Here is how to use Memtest86+ to test your memory.

1) Head over to the Memtest86+ site.
2) Download the latest Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO.
3) Burn the ISO file onto a CD or DVD.
4) Boot your computer off of this CD or DVD (at which point Memtest86+ should automatically begin its testing procedure).
5) Wait for at least 1 Pass to complete (The pass row at the top should reach 100%). This means that Memtest86+ has tested all of your memory one time. For the average user, allowing a single pass should be good enough.
6) Look for any error messages.

If no error messages are displayed then it is likely that your RAM is ok. If, however, you find at least one error message then there might be an issue with your memory. The only way to be certain is to take the RAM out of your computer and test it in a working machine. If the working machine continues to work, after its RAM has been replaced, then your RAM is likely not the problem. If, however, the formerly working machine begins to exhibit problems when its RAM is replaced then your RAM is likely malfunctioning.

Google: No comment on official Google Voice app for iPhone

2010-09-22

When contacted Monday by Apple Insider, Google declined to comment on whether it would resubmit its native application, which Apple refused to accept into the App Store last year.

“We currently offer Google Voice mobile apps for Blackberry and Android, and we offer an HTML5 web app for the iPhone,” a Google spokesperson said. “We have nothing further to announce at this time.”

Just in case you missed the big headlines recently, Apple relaxed their strict App Store guidelines and now have been approving apps that were previously rejected for replicating the phones built in capabilities. Google Voice apps were just about the first ones back in action and making their presence known in the App Store over the weekend including GV Connect and GV Mobile +.

So with both of those already available, how do you feel about Google possibly not releasing an official app for the iOS platform? Sound off below!

This is an official entry by BrianT in TiPb’s next top blogger contest. Think you have what it takes to join Team TiPb? Bring it!
