According to
a rough estimate by
haka, a Chinese blogger, the total number of bloggers in China is between 800k - 900k. As I know, most of them are youth: students, literature hobbyists, IT professionals and freelances. However, according to what I heard from the CEO of a leading blogging service provider in China, less than 20% users update their blog regually.
Haka also mentioned there were about 50 blogging hosting service providers in China. The largest is
blogcn, which has more than 340k users. Almost all those services are free.
Haka didn't mention some blog-like services. For example, one of the largest Internet portal in China,
netease, started a new service called
bulo on July 1st. The service combines blogging, social networking and forum. They have more than 550K users now. Even some famous Internet forums in China started to provide blogging services. For example,
TianYa has a simple blogging service and they have about 70K users. Those service providers usually don't provide RSS or ATOM feeds. I guess the reason is that they are concerned about their page views and don't really understand the power of syndication.
The number of bloggers will continue to grow rapidly. I guess it will reach a million in 6 months.
Apparently, there are far more online game players than bloggers in China. People really like wasting a bit of their time. :)
