| DEAF07 - China Part
DEAF07 has a special focus on China, and the Exhibition part also selects 4 piece of works from Chinese artists.
Go Up! Go Up! by Hu Jieming consists of 24 TV screens are stacked up as a vertical column resembling a ladder. The TV screens show a number of people climbing fanatically. The Highlight of this work is, when audience shouting or making noises, the climbers will fall down hopelessly, and start to climb once again. However, because of the limitation of exhibition space, only 16 screens are involved, placing at the entrance, and due to the sunshine, effects are not good as we expected before.
Zhou Hongxiang's Chinese Portraiture is a conceptual image work, collecting various Chinese people: workmen, policemen, the emperor of Qing Dynasty, intellectuals, monks, elders, children, beggars, farmers, judges. The interactions between audience and the people in the images are really striking me: you will expect the next movement of the figure, or predicate his next movement due to your eager to proof the ego experience. We could see this one as a modern industral devolopment of traditional Chinese portratiure, still finding those features of Chinese portraiture, huge scale, structure,Margin Leaving, and even signet. The original protype is not simply waiting people come about one after another, but using infrared-trigger. The infrared remote transducer controls 13 screens that same-size as humen figure, and one image of each screen. when you stand before it, you will feel the pleasure of interaction once the switch is on and the specific features of the people are actived.
Surrounded from Yang Zhenzhong is a circular installation of 8 synchronized videos positioned in a circle space. 8 projectors along with 8 DVD players are controlled by a synchronized controller. It explores the contemporary preoccupation with questions of identity and perception, and the ability of images to turn apathy into anticipation, and ordinariness into desirability.
Lowest Resolution, a work by Zhang Peili. Through its sensor installation, the body movements of the viewers will lead to the changes of the sound and image. The closer the viewer, the blurrier the video image. When we observe this very phenomenon being zoomed in, the content of the image is no longer important. viewing and being viewed become a conflict. Well, thanks heaven, I just saw eyes excersise.
