This picture showed how people swarmed to Walmart and vied for a spot to buy the shrimps on the opening day. I knew Walmart through a friend who has been to America and Walmart is usually located in neighborhoods of small towns instead of downtown areas (or maybe in Shanghai we call "uptown"?). I guess it is because of the huge population we have here in Shanghai and there aren't enough resources to be distributed. So we shouldn't be surprised by what we see (things like this) every day. And that is why many multinational companies (including those fast-food chains) shift their attention to Shanghai or Beijing (or Guangzhou). China is a huge (I wouldn't use the word potential anymore) market. And you don't even need to do that much of marketing if you are a well-known international company. Why is it so easy to get RMB out of our pockets? As one of the much-talked about bloggers on donews.net said, good brands change our lifestyles and our tastes can be cultivated up to a higher level.
The funny thing is: When these people (in the pic) went home and checked with other supermarkets, they found they didn't get bargains they expected. Walmart employed different marketing strategies in Shanghai and for some it is not only about the prices, it is about following international trends. Still I want to see a heathier consumer market and I want to get my money's worth.
