OOB (out of blogging) for a long time.... It is the end of the year. You got to wrap things up, grade the papers. A teacher's job is never finished. I am not complaining. I enjoy teaching most of the time. Well let me be honest: I enjoy it most when I see someone make some solid progress with my guidance and grow the way it is supposed to be.
I hate to mention the money part. Again if you live in a big city, you need to have that extra amount of money to "buy" some happiness. If someone tells you that happiness comes from deep inside, do you really believe in it? I begin to identify with some teachers in western countries. Some of them go into the profession after they have raked in a lot of money. To them, money is not a problem anymore. In teaching, when you don't have to worry about money, you know the results are going to look better. They are more than ready and capable enough to share with students their ideas of being successful in life and all that it takes to lead a good life....
This afternoon I saw something really outrageous. A woman peddler (30 something) was selling some beautiful china (bowls, plates) in front of the front gate of a residential area. You may say this is against the city planning laws or this ruins the image of Shanghai as an international city. Then ask yourself: Shouldn't we have some compassion? Shouldn't we spread some love, or some new year spirit, to say the least? There was this guy riding a motorcycle and he wanted to get through this place (the gate faces a narrow street). This woman made some room for him but this guy jumped off his scooter and kicked the woman and her cart. Some bowls fell off the cart during the brawl. This woman was brave enough to get hold of him by the arm. And in several minutes, people started to gather around and watch (you know how Chinese people are infamous for their readiness to watch someone suffer instead of giving a helping hand. Make no mistake about it, I knew this from the retelling of the story by one of the onlookers.) So this guy panicked in a way and he gave up his jacket to get himself away. And he looked back and yelled as he ran away on that scooter like wind, "you bitch, just wait there I will get some of my friends over and beat you to a pulp!". Something to think about, um?
