First, I have an interview in the morning in Con Edison. I have been preparing for that for days, and feel very confident when getting there. However, something unexpected could always hit on you with no reason. On the way to the company, I suddenly realize I forget to wear leather shoes! I am dressing in suit, wearing tie, but having sneakers on my feet! That will be terrible if I just show up like this. I don’t think it’s a good time to start a new fashion, so I decide to buy a new pair of shoes.
The problem is: no store is open at this time. I can’t believe those businessmen in Manhattan are so lazy. But there is really no time to complain. I finally find K-Mark will be open at 8:00, and that is exactly the time I should show up in the company. Since I have no other choice, I just buy my shoes at 8 sharp and run to the company.
It turns out I am not late at all. Several interviewees are already there. I have a brief discussion with them. To my surprise two of them are from Stony Brook. That is the school I went before transferring to Cooper Union. I can’t believe people from long island have travelled such a long way to Manhattan for an interview. But later on, I am told that there is even a MIT graduate here for interview. This proves again the job market is horrible. I feel nervous, a little bit. The outsourcing has greatly hurt engineering field in USA.
Then it turns to wait. By the time I entered the building there were five of us. I was thinking “well, five is not too many. I might have a chance.” And when I reach the interview pot, I see another 140 interviewees!!!!!! I am like “wooooow~~”.
But the interview itself turns to be OK, at least for me. I have a warm discussion with the lady. But she seems very tired and keep couooluiopu. She apologizes several times and explains she spent a long time on her tax form last night. -_-!!
Anyway, I think I have sold myself successfully. I have done everything I can and now it’s their turn to make a decision.
So feel very relax after interview. And I suddenly feel some interest to visit Manhattan in daytime.
Manhattan is a very fancy place. You can always see craziness and madness everywhere. In the subway, I watch a hip-hop performance by a group of black people (**free**). It’s quite amazing. I hope I can learn some dance too. On the street, I meet a band performing jazz. The good thing about this place is you can always find some fun. I really start to love this tiny island.
Our chairman of EE department decides to punish every EE student for “persistent violation of lab rules”. In other words, we never lock the door of the lab. The punishment is that he will lock all the EE labs for three days. Are you kidding? We are all working on our senor projects like crazy!!! And now, our whole department turns to be a refugee camp. Everyone is carrying his bags and projects home. Some pool guys have to carry the computer home with them. It makes me laugh for quite a while~~~….
Sometime you have to admit American professors are better than Chinese ones. They really understand students.
Today is the Open House day, which means all the high school students who have just been accepted by our school, will come here and tour around. My instructor tells me to show them my “amazingly unbelievable fancy project”. I tell him it’s my pleasure. And then he slaps on my shoulder and tells me “remember, make sure to find some beautiful girls among them and tell her your name is Tong and this is your great project. You will have an advantage in that case.” I am like -_-!!!!!
I still remember during my first year, when I was still with Jenny, she wasn’t doing well on her study so she relied heavily on my help. At that time, I still loved her a lot. I agreed to help her, but she still insisted me to take the class with her. The problem is I had taken that class already. Therefore I have to get permission from my adviser. I just went to Dean’s office and told my adviser that I wanted to take the same class twice. He stared at me for a while and said it didn’t make any sense. I told him I had a friend taking this class, we would like to do it together. He said he had been an adviser for 20 years and it never happened before. Then after 5 minutes debate, he suddenly stopped and smiled. He asked me “is your friend a girl?” I said yes. And he said “OK, I give you the permission.”
